Packing Suggestions for Visitors to Yanayacu

When choosing clothing for Yanayacu, one should keep in mind three general principles.

First, think layers. It may go from cold and rainy in the morning to hot and sunny in the afternoon. You will often want to add or subtract layers throughtout the day.

Second, prepare to get wet. This means bring rain gear. A rain suit is better than a poncho. It also means that you should consider bringing several changes of clothes with the idea of keeping several for "wet" or outdoor activities and several for "dry" or indoor activities. This way, no matter how poorly your rain gear functioned while out in the forest, you have something dry to put on when you return.

Third, remember that the very high humidity makes the temperature often feel colder than it is. While temperatures rarely drop below 65 F, many people feel they need a knit cap or even gloves.

  • You will need rubber boots (wellies) which, if you have large feet, you will need to buy before you come to Ecuador. Other boots will get wet and remain wet for your entire stay while rubber boots can be emptied of water and will dry inside. Smaller sizes are available here.
  • A flashlight is a must, D cell and AA are easiest to find here.
  • All food is provided, but if you are a snacker, then things like candy, gum, etc. should be brought with you.
  • You need to bring personal use items such as tooth paste, soap, shampoo, razors, etc.
  • We have a small library, but you should bring a book for cold, rainy afternoons.
